چکیده

The continuous random network model is widely used as a realistic description of the structure of covalent glasses and amorphous solids. We point out that in real glasses and amorphous materials, there are non-random structural elements that go beyond just simple chemical ordering. We propose that the network can self-organize at its formation or ®ctive temperature, and examine some of the possible consequences of such self-organization. We ®nd that the absence of small rings can cause the mechanical threshold to change from a second order to a ®rst order transition. We show that if stressed regions are inhibited in the network, then there are two-phase transitions and an intermediate phase that is rigid but stress-free. This intermediate phase is bounded by a second order transition on one side and a ®rst order transition on the other. Recent experiments in chalcogenide glasses give evidence for this intermediate phase. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Self-organization and rigidity in network glasses

Rigidity theory has helped in our understanding of the properties of network glasses. We analyze the connection between rigidity and various non-random features in the network structure. Lack of small rings in the network can lead to a sharper rigidity transition. We review a model of network self-organization that we have proposed, in which the existence of an intermediate phase that is rigid,...

Local structural variability and the intermediate phase window in network glasses

Recent experimental work has shown that the width of the intermediate phase varies considerably in chalcogenide glasses containing Ge/As/Se. As the chemical composition is varied within a series of glasses, three phases are observed. As the mean coordination of the glass is increased, the floppy phase evolves through the intermediate phase rigid but unstressed into the rigid and stressed phase....

Fast-track communication Meeting experimental challenges to physics of network glasses: Assessing the role of sample homogeneity

We introduce a Raman profiling method to track homogenization of GexSe100−x melts in real time, and show that 2 g melts reacted at 950 °C in high vacuum homogenize in 168 h on a scale of 10μm. Homogenization of melts is precursive to self-organization of glasses. In the present glasses, compositional variation of Raman active corner-sharingmode frequency of GeSe4 units, molar volumes, and the en...
